Shakespeare's plays were extremely popular during the Elizabethan era. A few theatres were built in London during this time including the Globe, the Swan and the Fortune. Not much scenery was used but many props were. During a scene in which someone's body was shown to be cut open, the inner body parts of a pig were strewn across the stage to make it look more realistic. Actors had reputations of being very low in the hierarchy. At first, plays were performed in Inns and Market Squares, before the indoor Playhouses were built.
